I am keen on having laser eye surgery because I hate wearing glasses. The problem is that I have a bit of a phobia about anything touching my eye. Would this be a problem with laser surgery? I am worried I might flinch when the laser comes near me.

This is a very common phobia with people who wear glasses, so you are not alone. I see many people on a daily basis who are concerned about 'things coming near their eye', and feel it is part of our job as experts in eye care to put their mind at rest.

As for the procedure itself, there is nothing the patient can do to affect the result. Even if the patient sneezes, this is not a problem. We can offer patients vaiium as a last resort but I prefer not to do this as the treatment is actually much, much easier than they have imagined, and completed for both eyes in only seven to eight minutes.

As part of the prep we provide anaesthetising drops, which eliminate sensation from the front of the eye. During the treatment, we gently hold the eye in place with a light clip and ask you to look straight ahead towards a green blinking light.

Due to our state-of-the-art lasers, this treatment is over very quickly and is virtually pain free.
