Dr Joshua L. Berkowitz of the Wimpole Aesthetic Centre explains the selective qualities of the VASER treatment and how that is such a valuable tool to the practitioner

VASER LipoSELECTION (or VASER Lipo) was first introduced to the American market in 2002 after extensive clinical trials and after receiving FDA approval. Since that time doctors and patients who have used the system have been raving about the results that VASER LipoSELECTION can produce.

The VASER lipolysis system allows me to perform a wide variety of body contouring procedures and achieve great liposculpture results. Precise site selection can be achieved. The sound energy is transmitted through a small titanium probe of about 3.0mm diameter and there are different probes for different surgical situations. As a result fat from almost any part of the body can be reduced.

Common areas requested by my patients are the abdomen, waist and hips, inner and outer thighs, the back, as well as arms, knees, under the chin and even ankles. Many thousands of VASER LipoSELECTION procedures have been performed worldwide with no serious complications directly attributed to the VASER lipolysis system.

Most of my patients specifically request to have a minimally invasive procedure performed under local anaesthetic rather than have a hospital admission and a liposuction procedure done under a general anaesthetic. This is, of course, provided that I can assure them that similar or equal results can be achieved. A careful consultation, patient selection and management of outcome expectations are, to my mind, always a vital part of the patient management.

I have found that VASER LipoSELECTION allows for very rapid recovery with minimal pain and bruising because the procedure is less traumatic than many other forms of liporeduction currently available. The ultrasound energy is very specific and 'tuned' to emulsify the fat cells but will spare other structures. Importantly the skin does retract to the new shape. Most of my patients can return to most of their daily activities within 48 hours of the procedure.

I usually instruct the patient to wear a support garment for a few weeks after the procedure. Correct garment selection is important and will affect the recovery and will substantially influence the final result. I do, of course, give each patient precise written instruction about aftercare which is appropriate to them.

I now feel that patients can get the shape improvements that they want without the need to have a major procedure. The VASER is an effective instrument that can produce a very clear result with a minimum of risk.

However, as always, prudence with the amount of fat to be removed and recognising the limitations of the treatment method as well as your personal surgical limitations is important.
