Feeling like an ugly duckling all her life prompted Kelly Simpson to have a breast enlargement. The results changed her life in ways she couldn't have predicted

What prompted you to have this procedure?

I always saw myself as an ugly duckling and was bullied at school for the way I looked. Born in Cardiff, into a successful middle-class family, I turned my back on a mainstream career to join the Navy as an engineer. After returning from the Navy, I decided I wanted a change, not only in my career, but life in general.

My emotional and physical insecurities were getting to me so I decided to do something about it and investigated cosmetic surgery as a viable option to help me make a positive change.

Who carried out the procedure and what was their opinion at the consultation?

I contacted The Hospital Group and booked a consultation for a breast augmentation and was so confident with my surgeon I decided to go ahead. I had my procedure at The Hospital Group's Dolan Park Hospital.

How was the experience?

I wasn't nervous at all because I had wanted it done since I was fourteen. I had done so much research I felt I knew everything about it. I was just so excited because it felt like the first day of the rest of my life.

How long did it take?

It took about an hour. I thought I would wake up feeling really ill and sore but I was just so excited to see these large breasts that I didn't feel any pain.

Did you have to take any medication after it was done?

I took painkillers but it really wasn't too bad and I'm such a baby when it comes to pain. I don't even like my blood being taken. It did get worse about three or so days after the operation but I think that was because I was doing too much - I wanted to show everyone my new breasts - but as soon as I took it easier the pain eased.

What were the immediate results?

I wished I'd gone bigger! I was very pleased with the shape. I had gone for round implants and sometimes they can look fake but because I went underneath the muscle rather than on top they looked very natural.

Are you happy with the treatment?

My life started to change immediately and my career took a massive transformation. I took up a part-time job as a nightclub bouncer in Cardiff, using my Navy experience to control the Welsh nightlife. During my stint as a bouncer, I was scouted to do glamour modelling, and decided to give it a go. From small lingerie photo shoots, to appearing in men's magazines, I now have a totally new career which has really helped boost my self confidence. I feel that the ugly duckling has transformed into a beautiful swan. I have also got involved in talking to young models about getting started in the modelling industry, highlighting the potential risks and giving advice to these girls based on my own experience. I find with my cosmetic surgery experience behind me that I can educate these girls into making the correct decision if they are contemplating surgery. Cosmetic surgery has given me the confidence I never knew I had and now I can share that with others!

Would you have any more procedures?

Three years after my first operation, I decided I wanted to go bigger and contacted The Hospital Group again, and booked in with the same surgeon for an implant replacement, taking me from a D cup to an E cup. I won't grow old gracefully I want to grow old fabulously with any surgery that is necessary. I definitely want Botox. I have just had a baby and I managed to shift the baby weight but I would have had liposuction if necessary.
