We find out more about Pearl, a groundbreaking new laser treatment that promises to produce great results in just one session
A new anti-ageing laser system for tackling fine lines and sun damage can dramatically cut the number of treatments and amount of downtime that a patient has to go through before the desired results are achieved.
The Pearl laser, which can be used to treat sun spots, uneven skin texture, brown patches and fine lines is effective after just one treatment session and requires only three or four days of downtime in total. This means that after just one long weekend a patient can return to normal activity.
This is in contrast to other more traditional laser systems which often need to be repeated several times, at three to four week intervals. This can mean that some patients are in the treatment process for six months, which can be both impractical and inconvenient, especially as practitioners advise patients to avoid the sun for the duration of any laser treatment.
The Pearl system is suitable for patients of most ages and can be used to treat the whole face and décolletage area. The Private Clinic of Harley Street is one of a select number of clinics in the UK who are offering the treatment.
The procedure only takes about 30 to 60 minutes to complete and involves pulses of light being delivered to the epidermis to remove the damaged skin cells. The laser simultaneously sends heat to the deeper layers of skin, which helps to stimulate collagen growth.
Immediately after treatment the skin will feel slightly sunburned. On day three or four the damaged skin will start to peel away, leaving new, healthy and vibrant skin underneath. The treatment gets its name from the ‘pearl-like' glow that you will be left with.
Dr Gupta, the skin doctor at The Private Clinic and a specialist in laser treatments, has been producing impressive results with the Pearl system and says that the speed with which results are achieved is a major plus: "I see many men and women who are looking for a way in which to retain or regain a more youthful appearance, and lasers can be excellent for just that. However, the same men and women I see don't have time to come back and see me five or six times and take a couple of days off work each time. The Pearl is therefore the perfect solution."
The Pearl laser can also be used in conjunction with another new system known as the ‘Pearl Fractional'. When combined, the two treatments are known as ‘Pearl Fusion' and are used to treat both superficial skin damage and deeper lines and wrinkles to give a complete anti-ageing effect. The fractional laser is particularly effective at treating lines around the eyes and the mouth.
The Pearl Fusion procedure also requires just one treatment session, however the downtime is slightly longer due to the more aggressive nature of the fractional laser. A recovery period of one week is usually recommended, and moisturising lotions will be provided by your practitioner to apply following treatment.
Dr Gupta says; "Whilst the Pearl laser on its own is great for more superficial skin damage, such as fine lines and wrinkles and sun sports, for a more overall anti-ageing treatment, the Pearl Fusion is quite remarkable. I show people the before and after pictures of patients I have treated and they can't believe that a laser can make such a difference, let alone after just one treatment session."
