Jo Martin, clinical director of leading aesthetic provider Mapperley Park Clinic, explains why Genuine Dermaroller has such positive benefits

I became interested in needle rolling in 2001 when the first kits arrived in the UK. Early results were good but the kits were expensive. The new Genuine Dermaroller treatment is rapidly becoming one of our most popular treatments as it gives fantastic results with the day of treatment being the only downtime.

The treatment works by creating targeted collagen disruption in the upper dermis. The reaction to this is the creation of new collagen in the treatment area, which thickens and firms, improving skin quality over time.

This treatment is effective because the needles penetrate right down to the dermis, or growing layer of skin. Changes in the quality of the skin surface appear in as little as two weeks. Structural changes, creating a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, skin tightening and improvement in skin tone and texture, can be seen after eight weeks and can continue for up to a further six months.

Most people require a series of three treatments, spaced four to eight weeks apart, although this can vary, especially in cases of more severe acne scarring.

I am particularly excited about being able to treat around the eyes, which has traditionally been a difficult area to treat. The treatment is proving to be a fantastic way of targeting the eye area as it is possible to get very close to both upper and lower lids, making it possible to reduce skin laxity and droop, especially in the upper lid area. It is also excellent on the neck and décolleté, where the skin is thinner, and is even safe enough to use on upper arms and breasts, and to effectively target stretch marks.

The tool used is a small roller with 1.5mm needles set in. The skin is prepared using an anaesthetic cream and because the needles are rolled in and, immediately, out of the skin, healing begins straightaway. By the following morning the minute holes are sealed, so make-up can be applied as normal. It is not uncommon for bleeding to occur during the treatment and so it is important that it is carried out in a Care Quality Commission Registered medical establishment, as a sterile procedure.

For us, Dermaroller is a useful halfway point between non-invasive techniques and cosmetic surgery. For those clients who are not ready for the knife but want something effective in the non-surgical range, Dermaroller used in conjunction with laser and light allows us to offer the best of all possible worlds for skin rejuvenation.
