By concentrating just on facial plastic surgery, leading New York plastic surgeon Dr Sam Rizk has been able to gain vast practical experience and develop innovative techniques to match the needs of his patients. He discusses the benefits specialist surgeons can bring over surgeons who operate on the whole face and body

Seeing a specialist surgeon means you are seeing someone who has spent years training and working in one specific field.

In the fast-paced realm of aesthetic facial surgery, techniques are continually evolving, incorporating new technology and methodology that ultimately improve the patient's results and recovery. By focusing on one speciality I am able to keep abreast of all these latest developments and apply them to my own practice.

I have also introduced and pioneered various new technologies to give patients a more precise, safer surgery with smaller incisions. Imagine the difference between a regular TV and a high definition TV and then add the three-dimensional concept just to give you an idea of the immense advantage of this technology. The 3D high definition telescope system is used to visualise face and neck structures from smaller hairline/ear incisions.

The breadth of experience that a specialist surgeon brings means they have the confidence to customise surgery to the individual patient, bringing together different techniques and approaches.

I don't do a cookie cutter facelift or rhinoplasty. I perform many different types of facelift to treat various degrees of ageing and customise every facelift for the individual patient to achieve a natural, long lasting result with the most rapid recovery.

My lift differs because it addresses the deeper tissue by going under the muscle, sliding it backwards into its original youthful position. This technique results in less bruising and swelling. Ski scars heal better because there is no tension on superficial layers. Once the deeper tissue is lifted, the excess skin is trimmed.

My signature lift is the modified deep plane facelift, which addresses the mid-face, lower face and neck. The facelift results in a natural, softer look and creates definition along the jawline and neck, without tightness. I take special care to hide scars inside the ear, which allows patients to wear their hair up after surgery with no visible scarring.

My 'Rapid Recovery Neck Lift' incorporates the use of the Endotine Ribbon (absorbable devices which can replace stitches that raise and hold deep tissue in face) and tissue glues, which results in a rapid recovery and creates a more natural lift with longer lasting results.

I was the first surgeon in the US to use this ribbon device in the deep plane facelift and neck lift, and I incorporate the use of tissue
glues to expedite the healing process and decrease bruising and swelling.

The benefits of seeing a specialist surgeon also extend to my male patients, who comprise a quarter of my patient population, because they have a unique set of aesthetic criteria which I am well equipped to deal with.
