The virtues of skin needling have been extolled by cosmetic practitioners the world over, but it’s not just women who can benefit from this new super-treatment. Here, Diane Nivern of the Diane Nivern Clinic explains how skin needling can boost the complexion of both sexes
Skin needling is one of those treatments upon which everyone agrees – it works. Practitioners love it because it’s simple, effective and far less risky or expensive than ablative laser treatment.
Patients love it because there is practically no downtime and it is about as ‘natural’ as cosmetic treatments get – you aren’t having anything injected into you, just stimulating your body’s natural collagen production to work a bit harder.
People tend to think of dermaroller as a treatment for women; Angelina Jolie is known to be a fan and it’s associated with dewy, glowing complexions with no lines and no open pores. However, micro-needling is much more than just a skin booster and can be just as effective for men – in fact, many men find skin needling less intimidating than other aesthetic procedures because it is a bit like getting a shave at the barber.
Pocks away
The process of skin needling induces collagen production which creates progressive repair and support under depressed scars including acne and chicken pox scars. Men’s skin is thicker than women’s and is prone to deeper, more pronounced scarring, which can have a profound effect on self-confidence.
Skin needling can be a life saver for some such men – patients can see a 75 to 90 per cent improvement in the appearance of scars 12 months after skin needling treatment.
Hair today
Another, lesser known, benefit of skin needling is its ability to treat hair loss in both men and women, which again can be a life changing process. The procedure works by stimulating blood flow to the hair follicles, encouraging hair growth and helping prevent further loss.
During this treatment we apply a clinically developed serum which feeds and stimulates the hair follicles. The serum is ‘pushed’ to a greater depth by the needles than it can naturally reach – thus enhancing its therapeutic effect.
A course of treatments is
recommended, usually six weeks
apart, and results are ongoing for
up to 12 months after treatment
commences.
