Focus Clinics are the UK’s first eye laser clinic to launch the groundbreaking Z KAMRA surgery for presbyopia. After a decade in production, nearly $100 million of investment and with over 5000 procedures performed worldwide, the Z KAMRA treatment will be available to presbyopia sufferers in the UK for the first time ever exclusively at Focus Clinics.

What is presbyopia?
Presbyopia is a Greek word literally meaning 'old eyes'. Right now, 1.5 billion people worldwide are affected by presbyopia. The eye is the fastest ageing organ in the body; even though we are at our physical peak in our twenties, 40 per cent of our vision has by then been lost. By the time we hit our 40s, 80 per cent of our vision has gone, hence the need for reading glasses.

Many people accept this as a sign of old age and go down the glasses and contact lens route. There has never been a permanent solution to presbyopia. Until now.

What is Z KAMRA?
Z KAMRA is available exclusively at Focus Clinics. The procedure involves using the UK’s only Ziemer LDV Crystal Line laser (the fastest and safest, record-breaking laser) to create a corneal flap. The KAMRA inlay is then inserted to block out unfocused light and creates a ‘pin hole’ effect.

According to Mr Dave Allamby FRCS FRCOphth: “Z KAMRA is a defining moment in the treatment of presbyopia. It is the permanent solution we have been waiting for. Z KAMRA provides immunity from visual ageing. The same inlay works for both a 45 year old, new to getting their first pair of low power reading glasses, or a 70 year old who needs far stronger glasses. It seems to freeze time on the ageing process. Z KAMRA is nothing short of incredible, and heartening news to the 20+ million presbyopia sufferers across the UK. Finally we have a vision solution that looks to last for a lifetime. It’s not hard to see the attraction of KAMRA vision. KAMRA vision uses what is known as Small Aperture Optics, which is a technical way of saying it’s a little hole! The power is in its simplicity. No moving parts, nothing to wear out or wear off. Patients from age 40 up to 70 are today using the very same inlay with the same small aperture to read again without glasses. It works for everyone; it’s a very democratic hole!”

The Z KAMRA inlay works on the same principle as a camera aperture by increasing the depth of focus. A photographic lens aperture is used to adjust the amount of light reaching the film or image sensor, and a smaller aperture produces a longer depth of field. The pupil, the central hole in the iris, acts as the aperture of the eye, producing the same effect as a camera’s ‘f-stop’. Once the KAMRA inlay is implanted, it limits the amount of unfocused light that passes through the eye allowing for sharper vision.

KAMRA inlay is something of a technological feat. Made from Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF), thinner than a red blood cell, comprising of 8,400 perforations which allows nutrition through the eye while blocking unfocused light, and with an internal diameter of 1.6mm, this inlay is virtually unnoticeable to both the wearer and the onlooker.

What are the facts about presbyopia and Z KAMRA?
This fuses a decade’s worth of global research and studies making world-class technology accessible to everyone affected by presbyopia.

The procedure is a 10-minute outpatient operation with minimal downtime and instant results.

Age-related eye conditions have recently been reported as ‘untreatable’ and this is simply NOT TRUE. Focus have been treating presbyopia with their unique Custom Q profile for nearly two years and the Z KAMRA launch is the latest development for permanent vision correction.

This means that once someone has the Z KAMRA treatment, they will not need to have laser surgery again in their life, as the effect of the inlay does not wear off.
