Plastic surgeons are no longer just offering dramatic makeovers but instead are focusing on the 'finer details', such as wrinkles and fine lines, it has been reported.
While it is usually stories about celebrity boob jobs or face lifts that make the news, according to a new report from Chicago's Sun Times, a vast majority of procedures now being carried out by specialists are non-invasive and often quite subtle.
For example, surgeons are now offering treatments such as Restylane for patients who want their ear lobes shortened, or Botox to smooth out wrinkles on a person's face.
Commenting on the boom, Chicago-based surgeon Dr Gregory Turowski told the paper: "In general, plastic surgery has become more popular because it is more affordable due to increasing use of financing options.
"It is also more socially acceptable and safer than it used to be."
It is estimated that Americans spent around £6 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2007 alone, with some £2.5 billion of this going on non-invasive procedures.
