A recent ITV documentary on dermal fillers has highlighted the need for tighter regulation of the industry, experts have claimed.
The British Association of Cosmetic Doctors (BACD) said that the documentary had also underlined the importance of visiting a qualified doctor when considering non-surgical cosmetic procedures.
Dr John Curran, BACD president and cosmetic doctor, said: "I am bewildered at how a non-medic can be expected to learn and retain the nuances of facial anatomy in a morning and be released on the unsuspecting public in the afternoon."
He claimed that, without clear regulation, the market is open to abuse and that the prescribing and administration of dermal fillers should be regulated.
"It would be a huge step forward for the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) to look at all the products in the same way as they do for medicines, giving the public confidence that only bone fide products are used," he insisted.
