Leading surgeons in Australia have claimed that Queensland's beach culture in a key motivating factor in the rise in demand for plastic surgery in Brisbane.
Experts say that while the rising popularity of extreme makeover shows features participants who have had cosmetic surgery contribute towards the trend, a more likely explanation for the increase in demand for procedures is the Queensland beach culture.
Dr Richard Lewandowski, Chairman of the Queensland State Committee of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) said that living in an area that celebrates the sand, sun and surf makes people more aware of their bodies and their imperfections. He said: "The closer you live to the equator and the more time you spend in a bathing suit means you're also more likely to experience the damaging effects of the sun seen through skin cancers and premature aging,'' he said.
"Spring inevitably brings more patients seeking procedures associated with baring our bodies at the beach, like tummy tucks, breast augmentation or reduction and laser hair removal.''
Dr Scott Ingah, another member of the RACS, backs up his colleague's statement, saying that boob jobs - increases and reductions, liposuction and tummy tucks were all popular cosmetic surgery procedures in Brisbane.
Both doctors reported an increase in men having plastic surgery and also a broadening of the traditional age range. People from all backgrounds are now looking to have procedures done so that they can look their best on the beach.
However, despite this, women still make up the majority of clients. Dr Lewandowski said: "Most commonly we'll treat mothers who don't want to appear pregnant after giving birth or older women who aren't happy with the changed appearance of their breasts,'' he said.
"I've always had a steady albeit small stream of men seeking plastic surgery. However men are now more aware that the public eye is on them and that where once rugged, blokish looks were the norm, now boyish good looks are the flavour.''
