Plastic Surgeon Blamed for Footballers Wifes Death Defends Himself RSS Feeds

Created on 11th September 2009

Gustav Aniansson, the plastic surgeon who performed the botched liposuction on Denise Hendry (pictured) that resulted in her death, has broken his long silence about the case to defend himself.

Mr Aniansson has had 52 complaints levelled against him and his cosmetic surgery procedures and is currently being investigated by British and Swedish medical authorities. However, he claims that he only made serious errors in 'less than one per cent' of his plastic surgery operations.

Denise Hendry, wife of former Scotland footballer Colin, died in July this year after suffering from complications caused by a liposuction operation performed on her by Mr Aniansson seven years ago.

Breaking his silence about the case, Aniansson said:  "I find it hard to speak about it because I do not know what has happened since 2002.

"I have never been up in court for either this case or otherwise.

"I did not pay anything. It was an insurance company. The sum is grossly inflated but large amounts are not uncommon in countries like Britain and the USA.

"The British system of reimbursement for medical care is different from the Swedish.

"The complaints are less than one per cent of all operations but still a tragedy for those who are not happy.

"Unfortunately, in plastic surgery not everyone is happy. It is common in plastic surgery."

However, despite his protests, other former patients of Aniansson's have also suffered as a result of his mistakes. Last month, the Sunday Mail newspaper disclosed that he had paid out more than £750,000 in compensation to 16 patients through his insurers.

When performing liposuction on Denise Hendry, Aniansson perforated her small intestine and colon nine times resulting in bloody poisoning, a heart attack, a collapsed lung and kidney failure.

In 2003 Aniansson removed himself from the General Medical Council voluntarily. This means that he can no longer work in the UK but it also means that he managed to escape a professional investigation and he can still perform plastic surgery abroad.
