Plastic surgeons have revealed that record numbers of men are now having plastic surgery in order to get their man breasts or 'moobs' reduced.
At the annual conference for The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), members were told that there has been a huge surge in men who have undertaken - or who are interesting in having - this form of plastic surgery.
Between 2007 and 2008 there was a 44% rise in 'moob' reductions - which means that the operation is now the fifth most popular form of cosmetic surgery for men. Surgeons attending the conference - held in Cardiff, Wales this year - heard that over 1000 men in the UK have had the procedure, at an average cost of £2,000, in the last year. They were also told that the percentage of men approaching cosmetic surgeons with a view to have the operation done has shot up by over 1,000% over the last five years.
Plastic surgeon Douglas McGeorge, speaking to the conference said: "We are seeing men of all ages coming in to have their breasts made smaller.
"They are losing their inhibitions about the operation and deciding to undergo an operations which previously was a women's cosmetic surgery operation."
Surgeons believe that one of the reasons that men are now have more cosmetic surgery is that men are now open and upfront about their bodies than they used to be. Plastic surgeon Fazel Fatah agrees with this and added: '[Men] can also get more and more information about it from internet sites which encourage them to have the op."
Douglas McGeorge, who practises in Chester, told the conference that one recent patient - a grandfather who had never taken off his t-shirt because he was embarrassed about his moobs - was a typical example of the type of man who now wanted plastic surgery.
Mr McGeorge said: "He had never been able to strip to the waist on the beach in front of his own children - but was determined not to be in the same position with his grandchildren."
However, it's not just moob reduction surgery that is proving to be increasingly popular with men. Male interest in plastic surgery overall has risen. Moob surgery is now the fifth most requested cosmetic surgery operation for men behind nose jobs, eyelifts, ear corrections and liposuction.
