Statistics have shown that there has been a surge in the numbers of teenage girls who are having Botox injections in India.
Plastic surgeons have been surprised and worried by the increasing amount of young women in their teens who are visiting their clinics to ask for anti-aging cosmetic surgery procedures - most commonly Botox.
Dr Vimla Rajan, a well-regarded plastic surgeon practising in India said: "I usually don't entertain young teenage girls. They're making queries. I give botox shots to girls, who have very pronounced lines and their professions require them to crease out the lines. In today's glamour world, everyone wants quick fixes.''
Most doctors in India agree with Mr Rajan's sentiments and don't advocate the injection of Botox for teenage girls. However, they don't dispute the fact that the practise is booming amongst that particular demographic.
Dr Sunil Choudhry, of Max Healthcare says, "Botox is becoming very popular in India, as the technique is non-invasive. Youngsters are opting for botox because their expressions are over-exaggerated. The botox effect lasts only for four months, after which you need a next shot.'
"In India, all good doctors still say 'no' to a lot of girls, who want to get their faces done. For instance, there's so much demand for face lifts, nose jobs and breast implants by teenagers. Some of the girls really don't need to go under the knife. Even botox requests need to be carefully thought-over and administered. "
Young women in India are becoming more aware and self-conscious of their appearances and are consequently looking for a quick-fix in the form of Botox.
However, in his book Absolute Beauty, New York plastic surgeon Gerald Imber states that instead of having Botox to hold back the signs of ageing, young women should instead avoid the sun or wear sunscreen, avoid smoking, eat a balanced diet and do facial exercises.
