25-year-old man dies after liposuction surgery

A young man's attempt to slim down through plastic surgery ended tragically when he died suddenly in hospital after having liposuction.
Kinner Patel weighed 150kg before his operation and was classified as morbidly obese. He hoped to reach a healthy size through liposuction and was booked in to have the procedure carried out by obesity surgeon Dr Mahendra Nartwaria at Asia Surgicentre.
The day before he collapsed Kinner had undergone sleeve gastrectomy operation. By all accounts he was recovering well from the liposuction procedure and was undertaking a liquid diet.
However, last Wednesday Kinner suddenly developed breathing problems and died shortly afterwards of cardio-respiratory arrest.
His relatives have now accused Dr Nartwaria of negligence. The Inspector of Navrangpura police station, PM Parmar, said: "We have registered a case of accidental death in this matter. After we get the post-mortem report, citing cause of death, we will take the opinion of forensic experts and if we find negligence of the doctor, then we shall initiate suitable action. In this case, the doctor himself had intimated us after the patient died."
Dr Narwaria responded by issuing a statement saying that Kinner had remained stable during surgery and was recovering well.
"In the night, he experienced sudden cardio-respiratory arrest without any warning symptoms. He could not be salvaged despite aggressive resuscitation and was declared dead. We feel deeply sorry for sudden demise of our patient. This is the first mortality after successful completion of 500 obesity operations," said Dr Narwaria.
This has been the latest in a number of high profile deaths or complications from liposuction surgery. Earlier this year, former footballer Colin Hendry's wife, Denise, died after suffering from poor health for years after a botched liposuction procedure. Denise underwent the cosmetic surgery operation in 2002 but the procedure - which was carried out by Swedish-born doctor Mr Aniansson at the Broughton Park Hospital in Preston - went badly wrong and her bowel and colon were punctured nine times. She was in a coma for five weeks and never completely recovered.
