Laser Eye Surgery
Laser eye surgery can restore normal vision and eliminate the need to wear glasses or contact lenses.
There are two main types of laser eye surgery: LASIK and LASEK.
In LASIK laser eye surgery the surgeon cuts a flap in the stroma at the front of the cornea and then uses an excimer laser to reshape material under the flap. The flap is then closed and heals quickly with little discomfort.
LASIK eye surgery usually takes less than one minute per eye.The goal is to reshape the cornea so that rays of light that enter the eye are focused clearly onto the retina.
LASEK is similar to LASIK, except that the surgeon lifts a layer in the epithelium only, instead of through the epithelium and part of the stroma. LASEK is used mostly for people with thin corneas who may not be good candidates for LASIK, which requires more corneal tissue for a successful and safe outcome.
