What is it?
On this site, energy-assisted skin rejuvenation refers to non- invasive, non-ablative, light- based treatments to improve the tone and texture of the skin.
These treatments can be used to treat wrinkles, acne, pigmentation problems, thread veins and broken veins in the face, although you shouldn’t expect the dramatic results you would see from more aggressive treatments like Skin Resurfacing – Energy Assisted.
Who is suitable?
As mentioned above, if your problem is quite severe and
you are looking for a big improvement, these probably won’t be the treatments for you, but for the early signs of ageing and mild skin conditions these are great entry level treatments.
If you’re concerned about ageing skin and have fine lines, or just a general dullness to
the skin, you might want to consider red light therapy or IPL skin rejuvenation.
For rosacea, pigmentation problems or broken capillaries in the face, IPL can
be quite effective, and mild acne can be treated with blue light therapy.
People with a sensitivity to light or a history of keloid (raised) scarring should avoid light-based therapies.
What’s the treatment like?
You will need to wear protective eye goggles for all IPL and light-based procedures, and a local anaesthetic cream may be applied to the treatment area.
For IPL treatments, a handpiece will be run over the treatment area, and you may feel a slight tingling sensation. How long it takes will depend on the size of the area you want treated.
For red and blue light therapies, a lamp will be held at close proximity to your face for about ten minutes. This won’t hurt, but may feel quite warm.
What happens afterwards?
After IPL skin rejuvenation,
there may be a small amount of redness and swelling, but your practitioner will be able to apply cooling packs or gel to help soothe this and you should be able to resume normal activities straightaway.
After red or blue light therapy you may have some mild redness, but this can easily be covered with make-up.
Multiple treatment sessions are recommended with all of these procedures, and results vary from person to person.
Will I have a scar?
It is unlikely that you will have a scar from any of these light-based treatments.
However, there is a small risk that your skin may blister during treatment, which can produce scarring.

Red in the face: Pulsed-dye lasers for skin
rejuvenation
Recent studies have shown that an uneven skin tone can actually be more ageing than lines and wrinkles, and a whole host of products have since hit the market to help us achieve an even colouring.
But what do you do if your problem is more than just a few sun spots?
Facial birth marks such as port wine stains can be hugely distressing and are difficult to cover, even with the heaviest make- up. Equally, the skin condition rosacea – usually characterised by severe facial flushing – has a very negative impact.
Whilst it is possible to achieve temporary coverage of the problem using Mineral Make-Up, these days more and more people are turning to the use of pulsed-dye lasers to achieve a permanent solution to the problem.
Pulsed-dye lasers emit concentrated doses of high-energy laser light, which is then converted into heat, destroying blood vessels under the skin while leaving both the epidermis and adjacent healthy tissue unaffected.
It’s effective in the treatment of fine wrinkles, rosacea, psoriasis, keloids, stretch marks and vascular lesions such as port wine stains and spider veins.
During the procedure, a wand-like device is moved across the skin.
You should expect only minor discomfort with minimal side- effects such as short-term redness and slight bruising; make-up can be worn after your laser treatment. For optimum results, three to four procedures are required, spaced four to six weeks apart.
