What is Tuberous Breast Surgery?

Named because the breasts are shaped like tubes, tuberous or tubular breast abnormality is a condition that can make a woman feel self-conscious and insecure.
Usually caused by a lack of development in the breast tissue during puberty, it leads to a malformation that can see the breasts grow asymmetrically as well as appear droopy and unusually far apart.

There is no known cause for tuberous breast abnormality but it is very much treatable by the correct specialist. This fairly complex surgery aims to restore the breasts to a more 'normal' shape and size.

Who’s suitable for Tuberous Breast Surgery?
You’d need to have a thorough consultation with an experienced surgeon to ascertain whether you are suffering from tuberous breast abnormality.

The problem is divided into categories of severity from grades one to three and can be difficult to detect when it is less severe and difficult to treat in the more severe cases, which is why it is important to ensure that your surgeon knows what s/he is doing (see below).

What’s Tuberous Breast Surgery like?
Tuberous breast abnormality can’t be corrected with a simple breast augmentation – in fact that can make it much worse.

As well as placing the appropriate type of implant, the more minor grades are addressed by releasing the constricted tissue internally, through the same incision as is used in Breast Augmentation Surgery.

Where the nipples are at obviously different heights, a partial Mastopexy might be necessary.

For those grade two to three cases where there is a marked distortion of shape, correction may need a combination approach, of constriction release, Mastopexy and Breast Augmentation Surgery.

What happens after Tuberous Breast Surgery?
Your recovery time will very much depend on the techniques used to treat the problem – go to the relevant pages for more information on the different breast surgery options.
