Zeltiq CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is a non-invasive, clinically proven procedure that selectively reduces fat in problem areas. This revolutionary method is pain free because it uses cryolisis, which applies cooling to the tissue. CoolSculpting is safer than other fat reduction methods because it affects only targeted fat cells, leaving adjacent tissue unharmed and intact.

This procedure is ideally indicated for people who are not considered overweight, but despite diet and exercise, have pockets of fat that bother them. While traditional liposuction and laser liposuction are invasive surgical procedures that are designed for fat reduction, CoolSculpting is an exciting new approach that has shown significant, durable and reliable results in clinical studies for removing fat without the potential risks and downtime of invasive procedures.

About the procedure

The Zeltiq procedure is comfortable for most patients, and no pain medication is required. It lasts only 1 hour, and can be performed to reduce love handles, belly bulges, back fat and other localised pockets of fat. When the procedure begins, patients feel a cooling sensation that goes away after a few minutes. The exposure to cooling causes the fat cells to begin a process of natural removal, which gradually reduces the thickness of the fat layer. Most patients keep themselves occupied by reading, working on a laptop, listening to music, or just relaxing.

After the Zeltiq Procedure there is no recovery time and patients usually resume their normal activities the same day, including work and exercise. Within several days after receiving the procedure, cooled fat cells begin a process called apoptosis, which is a natural cell death, and begin to shrink and disappear. Patients can start to see results as soon as three weeks following the treatment, with most dramatic results occurring over a period of two to four months. After a single procedure patients consistently experiment a fat layer reduction of 22%.

About Zeltiq

Founded in 2005, Zeltiq is a global medical device company that developed its patented, non-invasive, clinically proven procedure that uses Cryolipolysis to selectively reduce fat. The Cryolipolysis research and patents were originated at the Wellman Centre for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, by Dr. Dieter Manstein and Dr. R. Rox Anderson. Their initial work, published in 'Lasers in Surgery and Medicine' in November 2008, showed that exposure to cooling via energy extraction causes fat cell apoptosis - a natural controlled cell death that leads to the release of certain inflammatory mediators that gradually eliminate the affected fat cells. These inflammatory cells gradually digest the affected fat cells in the months after the procedure, reducing the thickness of the fat layer. Lipids from the fat cells are slowly released and transported by the lymphatic system to be processed and eliminated, much like that of fat from food.
